Lowell Nicholas

Dr. Lowell Nicholas, 75, of Sherwood, Arkansas went home to be with the Lord on January 6, 2017. He was born in Pollard, Arkansas on July 29, 1941. He was an active deacon, Sunday School teacher, and faithful member of First Baptist Church of Sherwood for many years. His faith in God was a foundation for his service, and he strived to embrace God’s grace each and every day He is preceded in death by his parents, Ethridge and Opal Nicholas. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Bonnie Nicholas; his sister, Mrs. Cheryl N Rodery; his children, Kemp Nicholas, CPA, Nicole Pearce, PhD, Tara Hux, and Kremer Nicholas, MD; and grandchildren, Nicholas Hux, Connor Hux, Savannah Hux, Rachel Pearce, Luke Pearce, Caroline Nicholas, Wesley Nicholas, and Jake Nicholas. Lowell graduated from Piggott High School and attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1968.Lowell was Deputy Commissioner at the Arkansas Insurance Department overseeing the Health Insurance Rate Review Division. He was responsible for determining and formulating policies relating to the new federal and state health care initiatives as well as providing direction and coordination for other agency activities. Prior to this appointment, he served as Special Projects Director for the Arkansas Insurance Department. Also, he served as Energy Director for the Arkansas Department of Human Services (DHS), Chairman of the DHS Energy Task Force, and as a board member of the Governing Authority of the UAMS Central West End Power Plant.Dr. Nicholas had a long and varied career including the practice of Dentistry, owner and CEO of an investment banking firm, ranch and farm owner and operator, commercial real estate development, healthcare management, and as a financial analyst. He was selected as one of the “Outstanding young Men of America” and to the “Who’s Who of the Midwest.” In his earlier years he enjoyed two major hobbies, politics and aviation. He was a veteran pilot rated for many different types of aircraft. He was active in both state and local political campaigns. He served as a senior advisor in four statewide political campaigns in Missouri and Arkansas and as a full time regional coordinator in two Arkansas gubernatorial campaigns. He was elected as a city councilman, mayor, and Vice-Chairman of the County Board of Health. He also served as the Chairman of the County Airport Commission during its inception and construction. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 10th, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Services to celebrate his life will immediately follow at 11 a.m. Both the visitation and funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church of Sherwood. Interment will be at the New Hope Cemetery in Pollard, Arkansas under the direction of Faith Funeral Service where he will be laid to rest next to his parents.
